There were times when we’d want to do something serious. What I mean is this. If you are with people you like and respect, and in my case people I really admire, you laugh and joke and have fun for fun’s sake. But other times, you want to have a real conversation with them to know how they think and what they feel. This cd is to me a record of emotional sharing, a very evocative record. The playing Audley and Michael, Robert and Kenny, later Too Tall and Scottie is top notch. By the time we were recording some of these songs we knew and trusted one another. We were excited. And I think that excitement and trust come through.

John Custer brought in the effects. John was around in those days, talking UFOs, quipping, and doing hilarious imitations of local players. A kind of genius there. It was only after Joe Tronto booked us at his famous club, The Attic, in Greenville, that we had a name for the band. Custer’s idea, Gardners of Soule. -Phillip Gardner
